Italian input to new Team free routine

The English synchronised swimming training squad has been working with Italian Olympic coach Stefania Speroni at a recent training camp in Aldershot.

Speroni helped choreograph a new Team free routine at the camp, attended by 17 athletes from the English squad.

While it was the first time the Italian has worked with the Team, she had helped with the junior duet earlier in 2016.

By Wednesday we had a fully choreographed free team which was looking incredible and very exciting.

Speroni was working alongside English head coach Katie Chapman, who coached Olivia Federici and Katie Clark to a 17th place finish in the Duet at this year’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Both Federici and Clark are still involved with the senior team who are looking towards next year’s World Championships in Budapest. And Karen Thorpe, Manager of the England Programme, insists the future looks bright for the English team.

Camp extremely successful

Thorpe said: “The camp was extremely successful. Stefania fitted right in and the girls worked well with her.

“By Wednesday we had a fully choreographed free team which was looking incredible and very exciting.

“Over the last two days she worked on execution and posture during the arm sections of the routine.

“This is an area we are aiming to improve this year in reflection of last year’s competitions and judges feedback.”

Paola Basso also attended camp

Another renowned Italian synchro coach, Paola Basso, also attended the camp.

She worked with the junior swimmers and looked at their compulsory figures. She also helped analysed what they need to work on when they return to their clubs.
