Thorpe and Shortman star in 13-14 Duet

International medallists Isabelle Thorpe and Kate Shortman put in a dominant performance to win the 13-14 Yrs Duet on the final day of the 2014 ASA National Age Group Synchronised Swimming Championships.

The Bristol Central pair have an impressive record together, having won gold for the England Talent squad at the Primorje Cup in Croatia this year, as well as claiming the U12 Duet title at the past two NAG Synchro Champs.

And Thorpe and Shortman were untouchable in their first year in the 13-14 Yrs age group, winning by more than 12 points after scoring 69.3667 for their routine for a final total of 138.5186.

“We’re really pleased,” said Thorpe. “We’ve put in a lot of hard work but it’s definitely worth it because that was a really good swim.

“I know the routine really well and knew I could swim it really well which is very reassuring and makes you feel more relaxed.”

We didn’t feel the pressure

Shortman added: “It’s always nice to be on the podium because it shows all your hard work has paid off.

“We didn’t feel as under pressure because we had a lead from the figures although sometimes it’s good to be under pressure a bit because you have to try harder to win.

“We did this same duet last year but I think we’ve improved it loads this year. We’ve always changed it but it would be good to have some music now.”

Having won Solo bronze on day two in Gloucester, City of Salford’s Greta Hampson continued an impressive weekend by teaming up with Jessica Spencer for Duet silver, scoring 61.9333 for their routine and 126.0518 overall.

Reading Royals’ Victoria Usher and Harriette Smith completed the podium, scoring 61.6333 for their routine and 124.0259 overall for bronze.
