NATIONAL CURRICULUM
The popular National Curriculum Water Skills and Water Safety awards have been carefully designed to support teachers in their school swimming programme. Currently the National Curriculum states that by the end of Key Stage 2 pupils should be taught:
* to swim unaided, competently and safely for at least 25 metres
* to develop confidence in the water, and how to rest, float and adopt support positions
* a variety of means of propulsion using either arms or legs or both, and how to develop effective and efficient swimming strokes on the front and back
* the principles of water safety and survival
'The ability to swim will not, in itself, prevent tragic accidents from occurring in and around water. Young children need to be introduced to all aspects of water safety from an early age to enable them to enjoy the pleasures which water can bring, but with sufficient knowledge to ensure their safety. The ASA Water Safety Award, if completed successfully, will go a long way towards achieving this goal.'
