Sedgefield Borough Council is the latest organisation to implement the Amateur Swimming Association’s (ASA) National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) throughout its pools. The new five-year deal formalises an already successful relationship with the national governing body and sees them working in partnership until 2013. The agreement to use the NPTS, a template for learn to swim schemes, means the centres will use the highest quality syllabus and awards system. The plan is a comprehensive and progressive teaching programme based upon sound technical and educational principles. The National Plan will run alongside the Kellogg’s ASA Awards Scheme and looks set to benefit the 1,150 children and adults that currently access swimming lessons across the three centres – Fishburn Pool, Spennymoor Leisure Centre and Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. As part of the deal the centres will receive additional support and advice from the ASA’s Business Team and will work towards Aquamark accreditation – the ASA’s quality seal of approval for leisure providers. The council began using the National Plan for their Swim Scheme in 2005 and changed over to the updated and revised version of the Plan at the beginning of this year. The Scheme has close links with clubs within the borough’s Sedgefield 75 Swimming Club and Sedgefield Water Polo Club. Sedgefield Borough Council’s Swimming Development Officer Sue Rogerson is pleased to be able to continue to show their support to the ASA through the new agreement, “I am very proud of the achievements made by Sedgefield Swim School; we have a strong team of teachers who all have a very positive attitude to the NPTS stages scheme. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work and input into making the programme work”. Despite reports of the decline in swimming facilities, it would seem that the nation’s love of the sport itself continues apace, particularly if the views of British parents are anything to go by. A new survey, conducted on behalf of Kellogg’s – a long-standing supporter of the Amateur Swimming Association– has revealed: 99 per cent of parents with young children agree swimming is an important life-skill for a child to acquire; yet one in five admit their children are weak swimmers or cannot swim at all. 87 per cent of parents recognise swimming is a great form of exercise for kids, with 51 per cent believing swimming to be an intrinsic part of childhood. One in three (30 per cent) of parents see swimming as one of the best ways to enjoy family time; one in seven (14 per cent) rated it higher than a trip to the cinema. Over 1,000 UK parents were polled in the survey, commissioned by Kellogg’s to gain insight into Britain’s swimming habits and attitudes. The results are revealed as the cereal manufacturer launches a nation-wide “Free Swim” campaign; offering 31 million free swim sessions to kids and adults alike, no full paying adult required. It is hoped that over one million people will take up the offer by redeeming coupons found on special packs of Kellogg’s cereals at over 600 participating pools across the UK and Republic of Ireland. There is no limit on how many coupons you can redeem and with the average cost of a swim session being £3.03 for an adult and £1.75 for a child, a family of four could make a saving of almost £10 by taking up the offer. British Swimming Sponsorship and Events Director Katie Brazier comments: “We’re delighted to see the results of this survey affirming swimming’s place in the hearts of British families. Not only is the sport great exercise, its fantastic fun, so I encourage people to make the most of this offer from Kellogg’s. Former Olympic swimmer Adrian Turner was in Northamptonshire recently to celebrate the launch of the new National Plan for Teaching Swimming at the Corby Swimming Pool Complex. The Commonwealth Games medallist and former Olympian joined local youngsters and their families at a special event to celebrate the launch of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) in the area. The NPTS is a template for learn to swim schemes, and means the pool will deliver the highest quality syllabus and awards scheme. The plan is a comprehensive and progressive teaching programme, which provides teachers with a clear and consistent approach. During the event Turner took to the pool with a group of local children to give swimming demonstrations and was also on hand to give out medals and share his experiences as an international swimmer. ASA Regional Business Manager Sarah Price was pleased with how the day went. “The event ran really smoothly and was a great way to celebrate the launch of the National Plan in the area,” she said. “It was really good seeing the children having fun in the water and I know it meant a lot for them to meet Adrian and see where they could go if they carry on with their swimming lessons.” Turner enjoyed meeting the children and encouraging more people to take the plunge. “It was a fantastic event to be a part of,” he said. “It was great to see the children having a good time in the water and to help them along the path to 2012. Ashford Leisure Trust, Wildern Leisure Centre in Hampshire, Sunderland City Council, Bristol City Council and King Edward VII Science & Sport College in Leicestershire have signed deals which will see them working alongside the national governing body for swimming until 2013. Local youngsters will have the chance to meet former Olympic swimmer Adrian Turner at a special ceremony to celebrate the launch of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming at the Corby Swimming Pool Complex, Northants. Adrian, who competed at Athens and holds Commonwealth Games Long Course Silver and Bronze medals as well as a long list of domestic achievements, will meet young swimmers at the special event on Tuesday 15th April. He will be on hand throughout the event to discuss his experiences as a world-class athlete and participate in a fun pool session with the children. The NPTS is a template for learn to swim schemes, and means the complex will deliver the highest quality syllabus and awards scheme. The plan is a comprehensive and progressive teaching programme, which provides teachers with a clear and consistent approach. The former swimmer Adrian is looking forward to encouraging more children to take to the water. “I think the day will be lots of fun,” he said. “Events like this are great for motivating children to stay in the sport and the Complex in Corby is an excellent venue.
