Sheffield and Newton Abbot go marching into qualifiers
March 18, 2017City of Sheffield and Newton Abbot impressed to book their spots in the qualification round of the Boys’ U17 National Age Group Championships 2017.
Sheffield won all four matches to top Group A of the preliminaries while Newton Abbot achieved the same result in Group B.
City of Sheffield lifted their only ASA National Age Group title in this event, beating Invicta 8-7 in the final in 2005.
And having finished runners-up to Sedgefield 12 months ago, the North East side look set to make another push for the Championship.
After a confidence-boosting 11-1 defeat of City of Newport in the opening match of the group, Sheffield added victories over Ealing, Grantham and Watford.
Ealing were the second team to progress from Group A, securing their spot with a 10-5 defeat of third-placed Watford.
Newton Abbot good value for place in qualifiers
Newton Abbot out-performed their ranking to finish top of Group B, having failed to progress through the prelim stage 12 months ago.
The Devon outfit were good value for their place in the qualifiers, beating Liverpool-based Bridgefield by a single goal in their opener before victories over City of Manchester B, City of Leeds and Caledonia.
Scottish side Caledonia were the second team through, winning three from four including a decisive 6-3 defeat of third-placed Bridgefield.
