Lancaster top Group A in Boys’ U19 Qualifiers 2016

Boys’ U19 Qualifiers 2016. Water polo action

The Boys’ U19 Qualifiers 2016 matches took place this weekend in Lancaster, as teams fought to gain places in the finals at the end of the month.

Lancaster and Exeter water polo clubs proved they were a cut above the rest as both teams sailed through unbeaten in their respective groups.

Lancaster were pulling no punches Group A, hammering home a total goal difference of 21 in their first two games, beating Invicta 13-4 and City of Sheffield 16-4.

Watford were no kinder in their first two games, winning 13-4 against City of Sheffield and 11-6 against Invicta, dashing all hopes of a place in the finals for both teams. When Lancaster and Watford finally clashed to decide who would top the group, spurred on by their previous two wins, Lancaster took victory with a 12-7 win.

Invicta and City of Sheffield met in the final match of the qualifiers, giving the opportunity for Invicta to walk away with a consolation prize of a 16-8 victory over the Sheffield side.

In Group B, it was almost a mirrored image, with Exeter this time upsetting the apple cart. In their first game, Exeter took on Bristol Central and went out strong, ending the first half 11-5 and looking very confident.

The Bristol side fought back in the final two quarters, but Exeter took the match 21-13. They also took down the Croydon side in a similar fashion, the final score 16-6.

Last year’s U19 Boys champions City of Manchester also looked strong across all three matches. They had a close game against last year’s silver medallists, Croydon Amphibians in which they won with a four goal lead, ending the match with a score of 11-7.

They also beat the Bristol side in another close game, and took on Exeter in their final qualifying match. The scores were pretty tight, and but for a hiccup in the second quarter where they conceded five goals to their one, it may have been a very different story.

The four teams, Lancaster, Exeter, Manchester and Watford head into the finals in just under two weeks’ time to decide who will be crowned Boys’ U19 national champions for 2016.

The U19 Girls’ qualifiers also took place at the weekend in Watford, find out how they got on.
