Sheffield City Swimming Club (SCSC) are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate aspiring head coach to join our coaching team and support our existing head coach as he moves towards retirement and to develop our swimmers to county and national standard.

The Club

Sheffield City Swimming Club is a very friendly, not-for-profit members club run entirely by volunteers, with a small coaching team of 5-6 people. The club is made up of 4 squads, 3 junior competitive squads and one youth and masters, with swimmers from age 7 to 70+. Most of our swimmers, both young and older, compete at local level, some at regional level and some have made it to National Championships. We are SwimMark accredited.

Pre-COVID we would run two open meets each year, one short course and one long course at Ponds Forge International pool in Sheffield where we train several times each week. Our swimmers participate in many local galas and some further away. The role would involve at least 10 hours poolside commitment, predominantly with one of the 4 squads, with extra cover possible, and additional planning and admin time. Travel to galas and overnight costs where applicable, will also be covered.

The Role

The squads train at 3 pools, Ponds Forge, Heeley and Graves Leisure entre. The training for each squad is spread over the week, so there is some training every evening and all squads train both Saturday and Sunday.

You would be expected to lead one of the junior squads, developing their pace and getting swimmers to regional standard. You will also be expected to work with the other coaches in the club to increase our intake of both younger and masters swimmers and to have an overview of all the squads, assisting coaching with each squad weekly. As squad coach you would be expected to communicate regularly with swimmers and their parents.

You will also be expected to lead on mentoring our junior coaches to develop their coaching and technical skills, and work with our young volunteers who help out on poolside. As stated above, our swimmers enter several galas a year. As a supporting head coach you would be strategically involved in choosing with the coaching team the galas to enter and work in partnership with our gala entry organising team to make this happen. You would be expected to work closely with members of the committee and report swimming updates to the committee at the monthly meetings.

All coaches are expected to positively promote SCSC, abide by and up-hold all our policies and adhere to Wavepower.

About You

We are looking for a candidate that is ready to start their Swim England Senior Swimming Coach qualification and has already had proven success at coaching youngsters to regional qualifying times. You would need to demonstrate technical excellence in coaching all aspects of competitive swimming and have excellent communication skills to explain expectations to swimmers. Ideally the successful candidate will have experience of swimming at regional and national level themselves and ideally will have experience mentoring.

The successful candidate needs to be enthusiastic to learn and develop new skills. They should be professional, personable and a good communicator. They will have effective time management skills- be well organised and able to plan ahead. They will need to manage and organise volunteers and coaches and to reach out to other local clubs developing links with them.

Applicants must have a current enhanced DBS certificate and Swim England safeguarding qualification.
