Volunteer week - The Power of Youth

Volunteer

Today we celebrate our Youth Advisory Panel, a group of young people from across the aquatic disciplines recruited to focus on issues relevant to our younger members.

Here we talk to Kelly Gates, Kate London, Dominic Anderson and Albany Thompson, members of our panel :

SE – What opportunities have you had through volunteering?

Kelly – My volunteering experience allowed me to get a head-start on my CV to explore different career pathways and find my love for swimming – from observing teachers and coaches. I met some fantastic coaches along the way, and even had qualifications funded for me as a thank you for my work.

Kate – Through volunteering, I have been able to become part of a network of like-minded young individuals who promote the power of young peoples voices within aquatics in order to enact change.

Dominic -Volunteering has allowed me to develop my communication and leadership skills , whilst being able to experience whole new sports and what they have to offer.

Albany – As a volunteer I have had a lot of opportunities both working at big events and working with some amazing people. I have volunteered at the diving Europeans competitions and World Series events.

SE – What would you say to somebody who is thinking of volunteering?

Kelly – Do it and don’t miss out! Even 3-6 months at a weekly session or activity. You never know what opportunities you could receive – even an employment opportunity at the end of it!

Kate – DO IT! Volunteering provides you with the opportunity to not only gain confidence but to help catalyze a change within a community you value and are passionate about; and it is extremely FUN!

Dominic -For those who are thinking of volunteering, don’t worry about whether you’ll be good at it or not, take the opportunity to learn more about yourself whilst helping the community around you !

Albany -Volunteering is an amazing experience to give back to a community that has helped you or someone you may know.

SE – What are your volunteering goals for the future?

Kelly -Impact the next generation of swimming through my time on the SE youth panel and take up a new voluntary adventure – combining my passion of sports and supporting mental health 🙂

Kate – In the future, I would like to complete my Judge Level 1 and attend National competitions as a volunteer or an official e.g. Artistic Swimming Combo Cup in London.

Dominic – Focusing on the future, I’m really looking forward to volunteering at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and understanding how volunteers can act as the backbone of such an incredible sporting event.

Albany -I have helped at many events over the 13 years of volunteering I have done, I would love to volunteer at more world and European events.
