Great Britain claim team silver medal at European Junior Diving Championships

Great Britain laid down an early marker at the European Junior Diving Championships, winning a silver medal on the opening day in Kazan.

The meet began with the mixed team event, as Desharne Bent-Ashmeil, Cameron Gammage, Oliver Crompton and Andrea Spendolini Sirieix combined for five dives between them.

Bent-Ashmeil opened with 53.30 points on the 1m springboard, putting Britain immediately into second place, before Gammage’s 65.10 points, courtesy of an inward two and a half somersault in a tuck position from 1m, had them briefly leading.

Crompton and Spendolini Sirieix continued the team’s momentum on the 3m springboard, picking up 58.50 and 62.90 points respectively.

That all but assured the team of a medal and Spendolini Sirieix’s forward dive with three-and-a-half somersaults in a pike position from the 10m platform ensured it was silver.

The additional 51.00 points took the GB tally to 290.80, more than 20 points clear of third-placed Spain and 25 points behind dominant hosts Russia, who took gold.

The action continues on Tuesday, with the 1m Springboard, 3m Springboard and 3m Synchronised finals.
