Daley and Goodfellow win Commonwealth Games synchro gold

There was an English Commonwealth Games one-two in the Men’s 10m Synchronised diving today with Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow claiming gold.

It was a close run competition between Daley and Goodfellow and fellow Team England pairing Matthew Dixon and Noah Williams, particularly after the more experienced pair dropped their final dive.

But in the end Daley and Goodfellow had done enough to score 405.81, with Dixon and Williams close behind with 399.99.

Australia’s Domonic Bedggood and Declan Stacey were third with 397.92 points.

After winning his first Commonwealth Games gold medal, Goodfellow said: “Five out of six of those dives were really, really good. It’s only April so at this time of year, I’m really happy with how that went today.”

Speaking on his fourth Commonwealth title, Daley, who first won the platform synchro event at the Delhi 2010 Games with Max Brick, followed by a silver at Glasgow 2014, said: “It’s been a really rough ride to get to this point today with the hip injury and that’s why this medal means so much today.

“I’ve been doing everything I can to get to that starting line today because that’s been the difficult thing, to be ready with my dives to compete, so I’m very happy with the way it turned out.”

Blagg and Torrance progress to final

Earlier in the session Alicia Blagg and Kat Torrance confirmed their place in the 1m springboard final, taking place later tonight.

The duo, who won the synchro 3m event on the first day of the diving competition, finished in fourth and fifth with Blagg scoring 259.90 points and Torrance 259.55.

Blagg scored consistently throughout the five rounds, with her best coming in the third, a Forward 2½ Somersaults scoring 58.50. This was also Torrance’s highest scoring diving in the fifth round with the same amount of points.

Speaking of how close the preliminary contest was, Torrance said: “We were all so close in the end. A lot of us were on the same score with just point-something difference, which shows great consistency across British divers.

“We are doing many of the same dives so it’s just about who can do them the best on the day.”

Following the 3m final, double 2018 gold medallist Jack Laugher and partner Chris Mears will feature in the Men’s 3m Synchro final.
