Daley defends British title as he builds up to Rio

Tom Daley continued his preparation for Rio 2016 by defending his national 10m Platform title at the British Diving Championships 2016.

The 22-year old was the only diver past the 500 mark at the event in Sheffield, finishing on 507.95 to claim his fourth individual crown in five seasons.

The London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist was even sharper in the prelims, scoring 549.10 – not a far cry from the standard of his performance to win European gold in London last month on 570.50.

And having also won the British 10m Synchro title alongside Plymouth’s Dan Goodfellow, Daley admitted his performances in Sheffield were an encouraging marker of his form ahead of his third Games.

“I was diving solidly in the prelims; maybe even better than in my European Championships performance,” said Daley.

“There were a few things that I actually corrected in the final as last year my armstand and my reverse were two of my weaker dives that I would never have been able to score tens on.

“So to do that today is really handy at this time of the year.”

Having finished fifth behind Daley at the Europeans, City of Leeds’ Matty Lee won silver on 428.00 while Daley’s Dive London teammate Noah Williams completed an English clean sweep of the medals with bronze on 389.05.

City of Leeds’ Rebecca Gallantree and Katherine Torrance also won medals on the final day in Sheffield with silver and bronze in the 3m Springboard.

Gallantree – who finished fourth in the 3m at the Europeans last month – scored 286.50 to finish second behind Scotland’s Grace Reid (325.45).

Torrance joined her teammate on the podium after scoring 261.30 in the final.
