English divers aiming to secure Olympic spots in Sheffield

This weekend’s British Diving Championships in Sheffield will see the very best English divers aiming to secure Olympic spots for Rio 2016.

The competition kicks off with the synchronised events on Friday with Tom Daley (Dive London) and Dan Goodfellow (City of Leeds) favourites in the men’s 10m Synchro, and Tonia Couch (Plymouth Diving) and Lois Toulson (City of Leeds) looking to seal top spot in the women’s event.

The women’s 3m synchro will see City of Leeds’ Commonwealth champions Rebecca Gallantree and Alicia Blagg aiming to add the British title to their European silver from last month while World bronze medallists Chris Mears and Jack Laugher also go for City of Leeds in the men’s event.

The individual action kicks off on Saturday, with Laugher featuring in the Men’s 3m, having won bronze at the London 2016 European Championships. Mears, as well as this year’s National Cup gold medallist Freddie Woodward, will be looking to impress the judges in the individual event and secure a spot at Rio.

World class competition in Women’s 10m

The Women’s individual 10m could be one of the most exciting contests of the weekend.

Couch and Dive London’s Georgia Ward, who won silver and bronze respectively at last month’s European Championships, will have a battle on their hands for the top two spots with the likes of 2014 European champion Sarah Barrow (Plymouth Diving) and 2015 European Games champion Toulson also in action.

Sunday will see Gallantree aiming to qualify for her third straight Olympics in the individual 3m as she takes on Blagg and Scottish challenger Grace Reid, who won individual bronze in last month’s European Aquatics Championships.

The final event of the Championships will see Daley feature in the 10m Platform, looking to continue his winning form after picking up European gold last month, in a near-flawless performance in front of a home-crowd in London.
