English schools to take part in START Diving programme

Schools across the country are being offered an exciting opportunity to take part in free START Diving sessions this summer.

Delivered by the ASA, England Programmes Diving and 12 diving clubs across England, the START Diving programme aims to give as many children the chance to experience diving in the run up to this summer’s Rio Olympic Games.

Clubs will work with regional schools to offer pupils up to year 8 (7-13 years) the opportunity to give diving a go and hopefully be inspired to join a club.

We think schools are an amazing entry route for the sport.

Diving is a great sport. It helps build high levels of flexibility and coordination, as well as developing core strength and general fitness.

START Diving sessions will introduce pupils to the basic skills and techniques of the sport in a fun environment. They will also take part in trampoline and gymnastics sessions designed specifically for diving.

The programme will also be an opportunity for diving clubs to spot future Olympians with subsidised training available for children selected as part of an England Programmes Diving talent identification process.

“We’ve found a lot of our athletes are introduced to diving whilst at school,” said Becky Milnes, ASA National Diving Development Officer.

“When we asked how they got into diving – 76% of athletes across four national programmes said that they had their first diving experience aged between 7 and 11, while 48% first got into diving as a result of a diving session at their school.

“We think schools are an amazing entry route for the sport and we are thrilled to be able to offer this free programme.”
