Frustrating night for GB divers at FINA Diving World Series in London

It proved to be a frustrating night for Great Britain’s divers during the second session of the FINA Diving World Series at the London Aquatics Centre

The Men’s and Women’s 3m Synchro competitions took place but Jack Laugher and Dan Goodfellow and Grace Reid and Katherine Torrance couldn’t match Great Britain’s medal-winning success earlier in the day.

Reid and Torrance claimed fourth spot with a total of 293.52 – a score that would have been enough for them to win a silver medal in the fourth leg of the competition in Kazan last week.

They were 12.93 points adrift of third-place Canadian duo of Jennifer Abel and Melissa Citrini Beaulieu, who scored 306.45.

The Chinese pairing of Lin Shan and Chang Yani, winners in Kazan last week and favourites to land the gold again, had to settle for silver with a score of 316.77.

Australia’s Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith scored 323.70 to top the podium.

Duo can’t build on strong start

In the men’s competition, Laugher and Goodfellow failed to build on a strong start and finished in fifth spot.

They were joint leaders along the Chinese pair, and eventual gold medallists, Wang Zongyuan and Wu Luxian on 105.6 but disappointing third and fourth dives proved costly as they slipped down the rankings.

Laugher and Goodfellow did finish strongly with scores of 81.90 and 88.92 but it was not enough to earn a place on the podium.

In the end, Laugher and Goodfellow were only 3.09 points off third place, which went to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Gorshkovozov and Oleg Kolodiy (405.53).

Russia’s Nikita Shleikher and Evgenii Kuznetsov were the silver medallists with a total of 417.12.

The second day of the fifth leg of the FINA Diving World Series takes place on Saturday 18 May with action in the Men’s 3m Springboard, the Women’s 10m Platform and the Mixed 10m Synchronised.
