Kat Torrance storms to maiden British 3m Springboard title

Kat Torrance stormed to her first British title with a classy performance at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.

The women’s 3m Springboard title never looked like going anywhere but into the City of Leeds diver’s hands as she cruised clear in both prelim and final.

Torrance dived last in the final, having won the prelim with a modest 306.40. And the English diver stepped up her level again to finish on 328.65 – more than 60 points clear of the field.

The 18-year old has built up experience at the highest level this season, competing at all four legs of this year’s FINA Diving World Series and making the 3m final in Beijing and Windsor.

And with this summer’s European and World Championships looming large on the horizon, Torrance produced one of the best scores of her career to establish herself as British number one, albeit in the absence of Rio 2016 Olympic finalist and defending British champion Grace Reid.

Having more experience this year has definitely helped

“I am really happy,” said Torrance. “I came here to make sure I put five dives on my head and they went pretty well.

“My last dive went really well. I haven’t scored that high on that dive before.

“I’ve got a lot more experience this year which has definitely helped me. Having lots of competitions close together has helped me learn my routines and see what works for me and to bring that with me to this competition really helped.”

City of Sheffield’s Millie Fowler reached the individual podium for the first time at British level as she claimed silver.

Having won bronze in both the 1m and 3m at the National Cup earlier in the season, Fowler scored 266.10 to add to her fast increasing medal collection.

British Junior Elite champion Scarlett Mew Jensen grabbed the third place on the podium with 261.35.

As well as capturing her first British individual medal, the Dive London diver left another marker of her potential with her score in the prelims, finishing second behind Torrance on 282.45.
