Jack Laugher named European diver of the year for 2018

Jack Laugher has been named LEN European male diver of the year for the second time.

The City of Leeds diver enjoyed a memorable 2018 as he won three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast .

And he then followed that up with two golds at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.

Olympic champion Laugher also won a silver and bronze medal at the FINA Diving World Cup in Wuhan, China.

His successes also saw him named Swim England Performance Athlete of the Year for diving and British Swimming’s Diving Athlete of the Year and Overall Athlete of the Year.

Laugher said: “It’s a huge honour to be crowned Male European Diver of the Year for the second time and this award really does mean a lot.

“This award is the culmination of a lot of hard work, not just last year but throughout my career and I’m really proud to be part of such a golden era for British diving.

“2018 was amazing, but I’m not resting on my laurels as 2019 is a big year, with the World Championships in South Korea and that all important qualification for Tokyo 2020.”

British divers dominate

LEN president Paolo Barelli said: “European athletes enjoyed another outstanding year and offered superb performances wherever they competed.

“For European Aquatics, certainly the European Championships were the absolute highlights of the year and the results achieved in Glasgow had a big impact on our prestigious awards. 

“Let me congratulate all winners and all the others appearing on the shortlists, they deserve every credit for their determination and excellence. 

“LEN shall maintain to keep the athletes in its focus and to create the best racing environment any time, anywhere at our events.”

It is the fourth year on the trot a British diver has been named LEN European male diver of the year.

Tom Daley won it in 2015 and 2017, with Laugher claiming his first title in 2016.

Meanwhile, Adam Peaty missed out an a hat-trick of LEN European male swimmer of the year titles as he finished second behind Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov.
