European Mixed synchro diving gold for Britain

Tom Daley and Grace Reid overcame a tight three-way battle against Italy and Russia to secure a European mixed synchro diving gold medal for GB at the London 2016 European Championships.

The Mixed 3m Synchro event was the first appearance for Daley at the Championships, and the pair remained in podium position throughout, until finally taking the inaugural European victory for this event.

Although Daley and Reid had been training for just a week, they looked like a seasoned partnership throughout the event.

After a score of 75.60 on their final effort, the duo finished on a score of 321.06, landing Reid her first major championship title and provided a third European gold for Daley.

“I don’t really know what just happened,” admitted Daley, “Grace and I were put together 10 days ago and we’ve done about five sessions together so I’m over the moon to come away as European champions on a board that I never train.

“It was great to have the home crowd, our families in the audience. It’s been really fun although I was terrified before starting the competition.” – Tom Daley

“It could be a possible event at 2020 in the Olympic Games and Great Britain are really strong at the mixed synchro events.”

“Today was a really good day for me and I don’t think I’m going to sleep tonight,” added Reid, who had finished seventh in the individual 1m Springboard earlier in the session.

“There’s a lot to take away from today and hopefully I can continue to build on it this season.”

Women’s 1m Springboard results

Grace Reid was in action earlier on in the day too, progressing into the 1m Springboard final in eighth place, and then stepping up her game for a seventh place finish in the evening’s finals.

She commented after qualification, “That was good and quite steady,” said Reid. “There were no major faults or misses and I’m where I want to be this morning.

“I’m really excited to compete with Tom tonight. We haven’t trained that much together but when we have done it’s been really good and good fun.”

Katherine Torrance also made her way into the finals. The 17-year old showed some consistent dives in the prelims to go qualify in sixth place, and although she seemed a little shakier in the final and finished twelfth, she showed great promise on her European debut.
