Noah Williams lands shock gold on final day in Plymouth

Noah Williams sprung a huge shock to win Platform gold on the final day of the 2017 British National Cup in Plymouth.

The Dive London diver won both the prelim and final, showing nerves of steel to close out gold in a thrilling final.

Leeds’ Matty Lee took the challenge to Williams in the final, leading after four rounds before opening the door for Williams with a dropped dive in the fifth.

Lee threw down the gauntlet with his final dive, scoring 109.15 for his forward 4 ½ somersaults with tuck to set Williams a target of 471.85.

But the 16-year old was more than up to the task, scoring 86.40 for his final dive to win on 477.95.

Plymouth’s World Junior bronze medallist Matthew Dixon – who won 10m Synchro gold with Williams on day two in Plymouth – claimed bronze on 432.70.

Quite shocked but ecstatic to have won

“It feels great to have won,” said Williams, who is trained by David Jenkins at London Aquatics Centre. “I’m quite shocked but ecstatic to have come out on top.

“It was very close and quite hard. I felt a lot of pressure going into my dives, especially following Matty who was getting a lot of 10s.

“I just knew I needed to get 9s on that last dive and that everything had to be pretty much perfect.”

While Williams’ success was a maiden individual senior national title, he was one of England’s top junior divers in 2016.

A sixth place finish at the 2016 National Cup was followed by Platform gold in the Group A age group at the Junior Elites.

He travelled to his second European Juniors later in the season, winning Group A Platform bronze, before playing his part in Team Event gold for the British team at November’s World Junior Championships in Kazan.
