Ruby Bower lands Group A Platform title at Junior Elites

Ruby Bower finally got her hands on Group A Platform gold on day two of the British Junior Elite Diving Championships 2017.

While she qualified in third from the prelims, the City of Leeds diver stepped up in the final to take victory on 374.00.

Bower is no stranger to the top spot of the Junior Elite podium, winning the Group B Platform crown in 2014 and the Group C title in 2012.

But while she has medalled in the top age group for each of the past two seasons, it was for bronze in 2015 and silver 12 months ago.

The 17-year old was nearly denied gold again as Bower’s City of Leeds teammate Phoebe Banks took charge in the final, leading by nearly 30 points ahead of the final round.

But Bower’s 58.80 for her 405B (inward 2 ½ somersaults piked) in the final round was enough to claim the title, with Banks taking silver – her best individual result at a Junior Elites – on 367.85.

Southampton’s Tanya Watson won her first individual Junior Elite medal with bronze on 361.90.

Eden Cheng stars on Junior Elite debut

Crystal Palace’s Eden Cheng made an immediate impact in her maiden British Elite Junior Championships with Group B Platform gold.

The 14-year old won the 3m and Platform double at last year’s ASA National Age Group Championships.

But she proved she is more than a match for the best juniors in the Great Britain as she took gold by more than 60 points.

Cheng dominated both prelim and final in Plymouth, winning the morning event despite dropping her 107B (forward 3 ½ somersaults piked) for just 27 points.

She put things right with 67.50 for the same dive in the final, before adding 70.40 and 67.20 for her other two efforts to finish on an eye-catching 376.10.

Cheng’s Crystal Palace teammates Louise Bradley (311.55) and Amelia Connolly (297.60) joined her on the podium with silver and bronze respectively.

Callie Eaglestone defends 1m crown

City of Leeds’ Callie Eaglestone was the other gold medallist on day two, defending her title in the Group C 1m Springboard.

Eaglestone won a medal with the British Junior team at last month’s 7 Nations Youth Diving Meet 2017 in France.

And the 12-year old continued her form in Plymouth, scoring 297.40 to take the title from Plymouth’s Evangeline Piper (280.35) and Crystal Palace diver Evie Smith (273.85).
