Torrance and Blagg conclude Gold Coast campaign

Silver medallists Katherine Torrance and Alicia Blagg concluded their 2018 Gold Coast campaign with good efforts in the 3m springboard final.

The pair, who won the 3m synchro silver medal on the opening night of the diving competition, were both off their best in the penultimate event of the Games.

19-year old Torrance, who recovered from a wrist injury earlier in the year, finished seventh with 286.05.

After dropping her third round dive, the City of Leeds diver brought it back with her highest scoring dive, a revers two and a half somersaults pike for 72.00 but it wasn’t enough to move her further up the rankings.

Torrance said: “Like every competition there’s ups and downs. Unfortunately I dropped my third round dive. I tried to bring it back as best I could with my reverse two and a half, which is probably the best dive I’ve done since I’ve been here, which I’m really happy with.

“It was touch and go whether I was going to compete at these games because I hurt my wrist in a car accident at the end of January. So to just be standing here, I’m really happy.

“To stand on the podium with Alicia [in the 3m Synchro] was more than we thought we would get. I came here to do my best and to do my dives and that’s what I’ve done.

“Looking to the future, this has given me a boost of confidence because even though it wasn’t my best performance, I can still be up there with the best.”

Despite a consistent performance, Blagg’s round four reverse two and a half somersaults pike scored only 40.50. This meant the 21-year old finished just behind her team mate with 282.40 points.

The Miami-based diver said:” Overall it’s been a good Games and a good experience. I’m going to walk away with my head up high and hopefully what has happened here tonight will make me a better diver.”

Australia and Canada dominated the five rounds with Jennifer Abel eventually taking the win in 366.95, just ahead of Australian Maddison Keeney (366.55). Team mate Anabelle Smith was third with 336.90 points.

Scotland’s Grace Reid, who made history when she became the first Scottish woman to win a diving medal after claiming gold in the 1m springboard, finished in ninth (282.00).
