Louth Swimming Club come together to raise money for the NHS04/05/2020 Latest News
Saturday 21st March 2020 saw the Meridian Leisure, Louth forced to close its doors to all members and clubs due to the Corona virus outbreak.
Louth ‘Dolphins’ Swimming Club like so many others were initially stunned, and it took a while to adjust.
As a totally voluntary club we are not suffering like many other clubs our main concern being the health and wellbeing of our members.
Head Coach Kate Thompson and Club Secretary Catherine Billington since day one, have put out regular information, advice, help available that has been received from so many sources. British Swimming, Magna Vitae, LCVYS (Lincolnshire Council Voluntary Youth Services) to name a few.
Nutrition and related exercise featured strongly, and many posted regular updates on the clubs Private Facebook page and emails.
As the days marched on more and more ideas were promulgated – and it was obvious the families were not only surviving but thriving and dare I say it having fun in unprecedented times- acutely aware of the Governments restrictions advice.
An idea by parent volunteer Rebecca Taylor was that we should as a club “All come together” to raise money for the local NHS on Sunday 26th April by running, walking or biking to see if it was possible to achieve a team total of 2020 miles. Ensuring Government guidelines were adhered to of course.
Well what a fantastic response I think everyone in the club, parents, grandparents. friends, neighbours and pets took part. So many stories and photos so difficult to summarise and talk about keeping the clubs spirit on a high brilliant.
Special mention to the Mason-Smith family who between them cycled 100 miles in 6 hours (without leaving the house!) raising £260
Total distance achieved 2139.68 miles (but like Captain Tom Moore still going up)
Total amount raised £1217 so far !!!
Head Coach Kate Thompson – “We cannot thank all our members and families enough for their hard work and generosity in raising vital money for such a great cause.
The pandemic has changed all our lives considerably but has made us all stop and spend valuable time with our families.
We have been in constant contact with our swimmers to keep spirits high and reassure all that better days will soon be upon us soon.
Claire Payne, one of our performance coaches has been an absolute rock to our performance squad by posting land-based exercises to keep their fitness levels up and joining in herself keeping everyone motivated.
We must focus on the positive side of every situation and our members have embraced and adapted so well under such difficult circumstances.
Without question everyone came together and smashed the challenge of exercising their target of 2020 miles for much needed equipment.”
Report by Chairman Bob Wells “What a fantastic group of people we have, and we will come back even stronger – so many excellent stories such good fun and so worthwhile our tiny bit to help our NHS “
