Water Polo in the East Midlands
08/10/2014Welcome to the home of water polo in the East Midlands. Water polo is a fast-paced sport played by two teams in a swimming pool and requires a high level of stamina and fitness.
The game involves throwing a ball around your team and shooting to score in a net, guarded by a goalkeeper, while the other team will try to take the ball from you. A player can cover up to 3km in one game!
- Find out more about water polo on the Swim England Water Polo Hub.
Senior water polo matches involve teams of seven players starting in the water, competing in four quarters of eight minutes. However, because the clock is stopped when the ball is not in play, the average quarter lasts around 12 minutes.

Water Polo Competitions and Development
Water polo clubs in the East Midlands play at a variety of levels, from local to national.
There are a number of water polo festivals for U15s at club level, while some of the more established clubs enter teams in the Swim England National Age Group Championships or British Water Polo League.
On a regional level, the East Midlands and West Midlands select a combined Midlands team to the Swim England Inter Regional Championships.
Some schools also enter the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) water polo competition. This is a good way to get more competitions and play games with your school mates.
Midlands Water Polo Committee
The Swim England Midlands Water Polo Committee are responsible for the management of the sport in the East Midlands and West Midlands regions.
If you have something you would like to raise at a committee meeting, please contact Sarah Dunsbee on waterpolo@asaem.org.uk.
