New Swim England Level 2 Babies and Toddlers Qualification

Swim England Qualifications have launched their new Level 2 Teaching Swimming to Babies and Toddlers qualification.

Developed to help babies and toddlers discover their love of swimming, the new qualification will enable swimming teachers to make baby’s first experiences of the water special and fun. The practical qualification will give teachers the knowledge, skills and confidence to plan and teach baby and toddler swimming lessons.

With lots of opportunities to play and sing, little swimmers will also have a great time learning and developing – and the adults will find it just as rewarding.

The Swim England Level 2 Teaching Swimming to Babies and Toddlers qualification content includes:

  • The importance of play in baby and toddler development. Teachers will learn about the different types of play, such as Social, Risky, Imaginative and Creative and be confident in planning activities suitable for each different type of play.
  • Alignment to the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and how swimming lessons will impact on the development of babies and toddlers.
  • Full session planning and delivery training, including use of different equipment, supports and holds.
  • How to adapt lesson content to meet the different needs of baby and toddler groups, and how to plan and respond to any health related conditions.

Institute of Swimming tutor Catherine Butt played a key role in the development of the new qualification, and believes it is truly unique in today’s market. She said:

“The key to the qualification is that it gives learners a great understanding of children of this age – how they develop, how they learn and how that is fundamentally different to the five-year-old swimmers they will work with within the Learn to Swim programme.

“Among the unique features is that learners on these courses will be assessed working with adults and children – not with dolls or using simulated practice. All assessment will be on real adults with real babies and toddlers, which should prove extremely popular and beneficial.”
