British Masters Championships set to return to Sheffield in 2020

The annual British Masters Championships will return to Sheffield for the first time in four years in 2020.

More than 1,000 masters swimmers from across the country are expected to compete at Ponds Forge International Pool from 24-26 April.

Swim England hosts the Masters Championships every two years, with Scottish Swimming and Swim Wales alternating venues in the years between.

Sharon Lock, Swim England’s National Masters and Open Water Development Officer, said: “It’s an honour to be organising this great event once again.

“We are fortunate that some of the best masters swimmers in the world are British, so we should witness plenty of fast racing and record times.”

Phase one entries open on Monday 24 February, 2020.

World leaders

Four world records were broken at the 2019 British Masters Championships in Swansea.

Joanna Corben set a new Women’s 45-49 100m Backstroke world record, swimming 1:07.04 in the first leg of Fareham Nomads’ win in the Mixed 160-199 400m Medley Relay.

Nomads’ time of 4:21.61 was also a new global best time for that event.

There were also new world records set by Birmingham Masters, in the Women’s 120-159 400m Freestyle Relay, and Spencer, in the Women’s 320-359 400m Medley Relay.

British swimmers won a combined total of more than 100 medals at the FINA World Masters Championships in Gwangju earlier this year.
