Craig Norrey claims 50m Backstroke world record

Camphill Edwardians swimmer Craig Norrey broke the 55-59yrs 50m Backstroke world record in session seven of the ASA Masters Champs 2016.

Norrey was nearly five seconds ahead of his closest rival, swimming 27.96 to claim the gold medal.

Simon Veale of Totnes claimed his second record of the competition in the same event. He laid down a new European marker in the 60-64yrs age group, touching in 31.24. This adds to his British record set in the 200m IM in session five.

Meanwhile, Chesterfield’s Ben Harkin claimed his fourth British record of the competition in the 35-39yrs age group. He touched in 26.37 to top up his tally.

Birmingham Masters’ Arthur Lowe set a new British record for gold in the 80-84yrs age group. He finished six seconds ahead of second place as he touched in 44.56.

World record hat-trick for Teddington

In true Teddington form, Zoe Liokalos, Laure Kearns, Hannah Loughlin and Georgina Heyn made it three relay world records at the meet for their club. Their third came in the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay as they swam a 4:00.78 to claim the 120yrs+ title.

Kearns commented: “We’ve worked really hard so we are over the moon to have broken the world record. I think we’ve had an edge over the competition because of the amount of training we have done, and our desire to win. We have loads and loads of training sessions going on, some people train twice a week, some people every day. ”

Romford Town went one better in the 160yrs+ event, having already taken a British record in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Event in session four. Michelle Curry, Barbara Boxhall, Kira Neale and Dawn Palmer swam 4:16.56 for a new European record.

In the men’s event, an East Leeds team made up of Paul Clemence, David Emerson, Chris Knee and Alastair Crawford claimed a British record in the 160yrs+ age group. They collectively swam 3:34.41.

Merritt secures European record in 200m Breaststroke

Jennifer Merritt was the only woman to break a record in the 200m Breaststroke. The Spondon Masters swimmer touched in 3:20.34 to claim the 65-69yrs British record. She was more than 21 seconds faster than the rest of the field in her age group.

Otter’s David Warren took the other 200m Breaststroke record of the day in the men’s 45-49yrs age group. He touched in 2:29.04 for a new best British time.

Basingstoke break 4x200m Freestyle European record

A Basingstoke team dominated the Mixed 4x200m Freestyle Relay in session seven, swimming more than a minute faster than their closest rival.

Oliver Espinasse, Spencer Turner, Sarah Adams and Fleur Parker set a new European marker in the 160yrs+ age group. Their collective effort saw Parker reach the wall on the anchor leg for a time of 8:43.06.

Karen Graham, Julie Hoyle, Stuart Hoyle and Kyran Parker of East Leeds shaved nearly 15 seconds from the previous record in their swim. Their 9:03.10 effort in the 200yrs+ age group saw them to the finish in a new European record time.

The only other relay record from the Mixed 4x200m Free Relays was set by Silver City. Alastair Honey, Laura Robertson, Rachael Keir and David Sutherland touched in 8:28.90 for a new British record.
