History made as Devon secure Masters Inter-County title

Devon ran out the winners of the Swim England National Masters Inter-County title after six nationwide events took place on two Sundays in November.

This year’s event made history as it was the first time that all 33 Counties across the country entered a team into the competition.

The Masters Inter-Counties competition, which began in 2000, has 72 events all of which are 50m’s with competitors ranging from 18 years old all the way up to the 75+ Years category.

Devon’s team came out on top, securing a total of 1972 points after winning 13 of the competition’s events.

Warren Barrett led the way for them, setting the fastest time in each of the Men’s 35+ Years 50m Butterfly, Freestyle and Backstroke races.

Both Kalon Veale and Simon Veale won two events each with Kalon winning the 25+ Years 50m Butterfly and Backstroke whilst Simon was quickest in the 65+ Years 50m Freestyle and Backstroke.

Devon dominated the men’s youngest age group with Cameron Williams setting the standard in the 18+ Years events. He won both the 50m Breaststroke and Butterfly whilst Fritz Diets added a further 33 points in the 50m Backstroke.

They also won three of the men’s relay races with victory in the 72+ Years 200m Freestyle and Medley Team as well as the 100+ Years 200m Medley Team event.

An impressive display from Hampshire’s swimmers saw them secure second place with 1929.5 points and Middlesex rounded out podium places 1904 points.

Jeroen Peters, Chairperson of the Swim England Masters Working Group congratulated Devon on their victory.

He said: “Congratulations to Devon on their title success.

“This year’s event proved to be an exciting competition with several counties battling out for top spot in every single race.

“It’s incredible to have all 33 counties involved for the first time, showing the enduring enthusiasm for Masters swimming and the importance of events like this.

“Thank you to all those swimmers that took part, to all the officials and everyone around the country that supported the events so that they could take place.”
