Guildford City set relay world record on day five in Budapest

Guildford City’s mixed medley quartet set a world record as British teams won 12 relay medals on day five of the World Masters Championships 2017.

The Guildford team of Michelle Ware, David Bryant, Mike Hodgson and Lynda Coggins won the 200-239 Yrs 4x50m Medley Relay title in Budapest.

Germany’s Berliner TSC pushed the Brits close, ducking under the world record with a 2:00.71 effort. But the Guildford quartet were even better on the day, taking the world record down to 1:59.99.

Ware, Bryant, Hodgson and Coggins had already won the British title this season, setting a British record 2:02.49 in Aberdeen in June.

Birmingham and East Leeds also win relay golds

The Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay was a profitable event for British teams as Birmingham Masters and East Leeds also topped the podium.

Trevor Clark, Hayley Bettinson, Spyrakis Georgallides and Judy Wilson won gold in the 240-279 Yrs age group. The Birmingham quartet set a British record 2:16.35 for victory.

The same four swimmers also won gold in the Mixed 4x50m Freestyle Relay, setting a British record 2:00.24.

In the 160-199 Yrs age group, Philip Pratt, Alistair Crawford, Philippa Rickard and Nina Williams touched first in the Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay for East Leeds.

The quartet set a British record, finishing in 1:56.52.

Crawford, Rickard and Williams were also part of East Leeds’ silver medal-winning team in the Mixed 4x50m Freestyle, teaming up with Chris Knee to finish second in the 160-199 Yrs age group in 1:45.14.

Basingstoke Bluefins were the only other team to win a Mixed relay medal in Hungary.

Oliver Espinasse, Spencer Turner, Lizzie Godfrey and Fleur Parker clocked 1:45.80 for bronze in the 160-199 Yrs 4x50m Free.

East Leeds and Silver City land medals in both women’s relays

East Leeds swimmers Williams and Rickard swam their way to another two medals in the women’s relays.

They combined with Julie Hoyle and Karen Graham to win silver in both the 4x50m Free and 4x50m Medley events in the 200-239 Yrs age group.

The East Leeds quartet set British records in both events, touching in 1:59.69 in the 4x50m Free and 2:14.71 in the 4x50m Medley.

Silver City’s women also won medals in both events, competing in the 100-119 Yrs age group.

Kelly McIntosh, Louise Kennedy, Laura Robertson and Rachael Keir set 1:55.37 for silver in the 4x50m Free and 2:08.17 for the same result in the 4x50m Medley.

There was also a women’s medal for Mid Sussex Marlins in the 240-279 Yrs age group.

Kathy Bidnall, Linda Hooker, Sally Mills and Alison Gwynn stopped the clock on 2:35.29 for bronze.

Spencer seal men’s relay silver

Spencer were the only British team to reach the podium in the men’s relay events.

The quartet of Greg Kahn, Jason Lawson, Jack Marriott and Frederick White won silver in the 120-159 Yrs 4x50m Medley, setting a British record 1:47.62.

They also lowered the British record in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay, finishing fourth in 1:37.40 – just 0.51 seconds off the podium.
