Helen Gorman wins 200m Individual Medley title in Budapest

Helen Gorman won her first gold of the 2017 World Masters Championships with victory in the 200m Individual Medley in Budapest.

The Long Eaton swimmer was nearly five seconds clear of the field as she took the touch in the 45-49 Yrs age group.

Gorman had already reached the podium once in Hungary, setting a British record for 100m Breaststroke silver.

And she was in record-breaking form again in the 200m IM, lowering her own national marker to 2:32.18 for the win.

Sophie Casson sets British record for silver

Sophie Casson also broke the British record as she claimed silver in the 30-34 Yrs age group.

The Carnforth Otters swimmer had already topped the podium three times in Hungary, winning the 200m and 800m Free as well as the 200m Back.

And she continued her impressive meet with a 2:24.78 effort in the 200m IM, slicing two seconds off the old British record.

While her time would have won gold at last year’s European Championships, it was another European swimmer – Germany’s Maren Spietzack – who denied her a fourth title, clocking 2:23.94.

Palmer and Heath reach 200m IM podium

Romford Town’s Dawn Palmer also landed silver in the 200m IM, finishing second fastest in the 40-44 Yrs age group.

European champion Palmer stopped the clock on 2:32.59 with only Japan’s Hitomi Matsuda (2:30.68) faster on the day.

The fourth British medal in the 200m IM went to Amanda Heath in the 60-64 Yrs age group.

The Spencer swimmer picked up her third bronze of the competition, stopping the clock on 3:06.17.
