Records tumble as Harrogate District Swimming Club smash world record

Harrogate District Swimming Club smashed the previous world record as they stormed to victory at the Swim England Masters National Championships.

The quartet of Julie Hoyle, Jo Beardsworth, Karen Graham and Fiona Cryan clocked a time of 9:24.37 in the 200+ Years Women’s 4x200m Freestyle – which was more than five seconds faster than the previous benchmark time.

They achieved just the second world record-breaking time so far in this year’s competition, following on from East Leeds’ scintillating swim earlier in the day.

Alongside the impressive swim from Harrogate, a further two European records and 17 British records were broken during the final session of day one at Ponds Forge.

There were some stand-out performances from Spencer Swim Team’s Amanda Heath, who carried her record-breaking form into this competition.

After breaking two world records in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke events at the European Masters Championships earlier this year, Heath continued a successful 2022 to date.

The 65-year-old started out with a new British record time of 40.37 in the 60-65 Years Women’s 50m Breaststroke and later set a new European record of 6:21.67 in the 400m Individual Medley.

The other new European record was achieved by Birmingham Masters in the 320+ Years Men’s 4x200m Freestyle.

Keith Ingram, Arthur Lowe, John Tennant and Trevor Clark teamed up to finish in a time of 14:21.45.

Breaststroke brilliance

The Women’s 50m Breaststroke saw Derventio’s Imogen Clark and City of Cardiff’s Helen Gorman lower the British records for their respective age groups.

Clark set a time of 29.61 in the 18-24 Years age group, while Gorman snuck under the previous best by 0.58 with her time of 34.41.

In the men’s event, Basingstoke’s Martin Bennell, Portsmouth’s Christopher Jones and Kingston upon Hull’s Colin Sage set new British record times.

Bennell finished just inside the previous best in the 45-49 Years age group (29.99) as he touched the wall in 29.71.

Jones clocked in at 29.19 in the 40-44 Years age group and at 86-years-old, Sage touched the wall in 52.22.

Individual Medley magic

Alongside Heath’s European record, there were three British records in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley.

Trafford Metro’s Judy Brown swam a new British record time of 5:44.73 in the 55-59 Years age group and swimming out in lane one was Holywell’s Nicola Latty, who set a new 50-54 Years record of 5:25:49.

Loughborough University’s Rachel Anderson lowered the 18-24 Years GB record by 1.12 to finish in 4:45.47.

Fantastic five

Five of the evening’s British records came in the 100m Butterfly events.

Three of those were broken in the men’s age groups through Alec Johnson, Michael Hodgson and Ben Harkin.

Warrington swimmer Harkin set the 40-44 Years record at 57.24, while 55-year-old Hodgson of Woking knocked more than a second off his age group record with his time of 1:01.01.

Johnson joined his Trafford Metro teammate Brown on the list of latest British record holders. He swam a time of 1:05.39 in the 60-64 Years age group.

Georgina Heyn (1:04.69) of Teddington and Northampton’s Victoria Reading (1:04.64) were the two record breakers in the women’s events.

Team triumphs

Adding to their world record, East Leeds later broke a British record, but this time in the 200+ Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Team event.

Chris Knee, Andrew Carr, David Emerson and Paul Clemence dropped the record significantly – finishing more than 10 seconds under the previous time with 8:37.33.

In the 240+ age group, there was another impressive swim from Warrington Masters as Russell Mason, Graham Padgett, Mark Jones and Christopher Rix also made a huge dent in the previous benchmark time.

The previous time stood at 9:47.75 but the team touched the wall in 9:35.29 – improving the time by more than 12 seconds.
