Palmer and Latty set British records for 400m IM golds

Dawn Palmer and Nicola Latty set British records as they clinched 400m Individual Medley golds on day three of the World Masters Championships 2017.

There were also 400m IM medals for Laura Robertson and Amanda Heath as the British women continued their excellent start to the Championships.

Romford Town swimmer Palmer clocked 5:23.73 to take the touch in the 40-44 Yrs age group.

The British swimmer was locked in a thrilling battle for the title as Japan’s Hitomi Matsuda took charge of the heat, turning with more than 3.5 seconds in hand at the 300m mark.

But Palmer’s strong front crawl saw her draw level with her Japanese rival in the final 50m, ultimately passing her to take the touch by 0.44 seconds.

The time beats Palmer’s old British record of 5:26.90 from March this year.

Nicola Latty beats British marker in 45-49 Yrs age group

Latty’s British marker of 5:37.89 in the 45-49 Yrs age group had been set twice – her season’s best from the past two seasons.

But the Holywell SC sliced more than two seconds off that time as she clinched her first gold of the meet.

Swimming in the same heat as Palmer and Matsuda, Latty touched in 5:35.42 – a full 2.28 seconds clear of the field in her age group.

Heath won her second bronze medal in as many days in the 60-64 Yrs age group.

The Spencer swimmer repeated her result from last night’s 50m Fly to touch in 6:40.39 in the 400m IM.

Meanwhile, Silver City swimmer Laura Robertson won silver in the youngest 25-29 Yrs age group. The Scottish swimmer touched in 5:17.81.
