Sophie Casson breaks world record in opening session of British Masters

Sophie Casson ensured the 2017 British Masters and Senior Age Group Championships started with a bang as she set a 1500m Freestyle world record in the opening session in Aberdeen.

The Carnforth Otters swimmer, who competes in the 30-34 Years age group, came home in 17:20.55. Her time sailed under American swimmer Heidi George’s 17:25.81 effort from October 2009.

While Casson was the only swimmer to break a world or European record in the 1500m Freestyle in Scotland, there were two more British records.

Elly and Moore set British records

Karen Elly lowered the British marker in the 55-59 Years age group.

The Hyde Seal swimmer, who won European bronze over 800m Free last summer, stopped the clock on 20:43.03, only prevented from winning gold in her age group by Ireland’s Dymphna Morris (20:21.56).

And Elly had double reason to celebrate after obliterating Anne Bourne’s old national marker of 21:18.31 from 2011.

East Leeds’ Bill Moore was the third record-breaking swimmer in the opening session in Scotland.

As the only competitor in the 80-84 Years age group, Moore clocked 30:10.14. His time took down Roger Burrell’s 30:20.47 effort from May 2012.
