Wills and Casson return to top of World Championship podium

Emma Wills and Sophie Casson returned to the top of the podium with 200m Freestyle golds on day three of the World Masters Championships 2017.

The British pair repeated their results from the opening day’s 800m Free, while Casson also won 200m Back gold on day two in Budapest.

York City Baths swimmer Wills sailed under her season’s best, clocking 2:14.33 to take the 35-39 Yrs title.

Wills’ time was 0.7 seconds clear of the field in her age group, and just 0.69 seconds shy of Sarah Collings’ British record from last year’s Europeans.

Casson continued her record-breaking form as she clocked a new Championship record in the 30-34 Yrs age group.

The Carnforth Otters swimmer had more than four seconds in hand on her rivals as she touched in 2:05.97 in her heat.

The British swimmer’s time was the fastest from any woman on the day and just 0.06 seconds slower than Caroline Saxby’s European and British marker.

Sue Haigh breaks 21-year old British record in 200m Free

While Wills and Casson fell narrowly short of British records, Sue Haigh took down a long-standing one for bronze in the 65-69 Yrs age group.

The Tiverton swimmer, who competed for Team GB at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, stopped the clock on 2:46.58 in her heat.

The time smashes Jane Asher’s old British record of 2:53.14, set in Sheffield in June 1996.

Gregory Bird was the only British men’s medallist in the 200m Free.

The Northampton swimmer clinched silver in the 25-29 Yrs age group, touching in 1:54.37.
