Yorkshire win Masters Inter-County Competition 2019 to complete hat-trick

Yorkshire edged out Warwickshire to be crowned champions of the Swim England National Masters Inter-County Competition for the third straight year.

The White Rose county took 27 swimmers to the North West and North East regions meet in Huddersfield.

Alistair Crawford, David Emerson and Ryan Flanagan led the way for Yorkshire, each winning three races to boost Yorkshire’s charge.

Crawford won the Men’s 35 Years+ titles in 50m Freestyle, Butterfly and Breaststroke, while Emerson won the Men’s 55 Years+ 50m Freestyle, as well as the 50m Butterfly titles in both the 45 Years+ and 55 Years + age groups.

Flanagan dominated the younger age groups, winning gold in the Men’s 18 Years+ 50m Butterfly, as well as the Men’s 25 Years+ 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle.

Nine podium finishes in the relays helped Yorkshire finish with a total of 1554.0 points, only six clear of Warwickshire.

This is the third consecutive year in which Warwickshire have finished second behind Yorkshire.

Sussex won the South East regional competition to finish third overall, also breaking the 1500 point mark.

Exciting contest

More than 700 swimmers from 27 counties across the country took part in the event at five venues – Bury St Edmunds, Horsham, Huddersfield, Rugby and Street.

Sharon Lock, Swim England National Masters Officer, said: “Congratulations to Yorkshire on their title success.

“It once again proved to be an exciting competition with several counties in contention for the top spot.

“The galas are designed to fit into a very short space of time which means it is always a hectic but enjoyable afternoon of racing.

“A big thank you to Dave Chaney, who has the difficult task of collating the results for every race, allocating the points and coming up with the winning county.

“This is a huge job and everyone is very grateful to Dave for all his hard work.”

Swimmers can see exactly where they rank in comparison to everyone else in the competition when viewing the full results.

Sharon encouraged anyone interested in taking part in next year’s competition to speak to their county representative.

She added: “It’s a great competition and you’ll love being part of it.”
