Phoebe Griffiths dominates girls 3km race

The first afternoon session of the ASA Open Water Festival saw the boys and girls 3km age group events take place.

The event was split into four waves, with the 15yrs and 16yrs boys and girls sent out at 15 minute intervals.

Phoebe Griffiths maintained the lead from the first buoy in the Girls’ 16yrs race. She was part of the bronze medal winning relay quartet at the World Junior Open Water Championships in Hoorn.

The Ellesmere swimmer had two girls hot on her heels for the duration, but she kept pace and secured gold in 38:04.

Griffiths said: “It feels good. I was hoping to get a gold medal here today. I have just got back from the World Junior Champs in Hoorn. I’m a bit tired, but I was hoping for gold.

“There are the European Juniors in September, so hopefully I’ll qualify for that and do well there too.”

Northampton’s Jack Buswell wins boys’ 15yrs gold

Jack Buswell of Northampton took the gold medal in the Boys 15yrs event. He managed to put a good two body lengths between himself and second place. He finished with a fifteen second lead over Grimsby’s George Barber, taking the title in 36:50.

Buswell commented, “It feels really nice, I came second last year, so it’s good to go up a place.

“I’ve been injured for a month with a bad shoulder, so the last two weeks I have been training 22 hours a week.”
