Six marathon swimmers confirmed for World Aquatics Championships

A team of six strong marathon swimmers have been chosen to represent Great Britain at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea next month.

The team is comprised of experienced athletes and also two younger swimmers, one of which is on the Swim England talent pathway, who have risen through the junior open water teams.

Both Jack Burnell and Alice Dearing had already confirmed their selection due to finishing as the first Brits in the opening leg of the FINA Marathon Swim World Series in Doha earlier this year.

The decision was made to add Toby Robinson, Danielle Huskisson, Maisie Macartney and Gordon Mason to the team after their strong form throughout the year.

British Swimming Marathon Lead, Bernie Dietzig, said: “With the full team named I am very much looking forward to travelling to South Korea next month.

“The swimmers preparation has been excellent and I am confident that they can finish in the top 10, which is the criteria for Olympic qualification.

“It’s also great to have Maisie and Gordon transferring from the junior ranks into their first senior championship team and I hope to see yet more progress out in the Far East.”

Burnell, Huskisson and Robinson were all part of the Great Britain team that finished an agonising four seconds off a medal in the European Championships Open Water Mixed Team 5K race in Glasgow last year.

Robinson also competed at the last World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, whilst it will be Huskisson’s fourth straight Worlds.

This year’s event will take place between the 12 – 28 July and will feature artistic swimming, diving and competitive swimming as well as open water.
