Promising open water juniors head to Mallorca for training camp

News and Updates

Ten promising English distance and open water swimmers will travel to Mallorca to face international competitors as part of a long course distance training camp.

The team from the Swim England Junior International Competition Squad will compete in the Colonia Classic Series, which is organised by the prestigious BEST Centre in Mallorca.

The event, which runs from 25-31 May, coincides with BEST Fest – the open water swimming festival.

Team leader, Mike Parker, said: “This will be a great opportunity for swimmers to hone their open water racing skills and tactics, prior to the British Swimming Open Water European Junior and World Trials, which will be held on Lake Windermere on 8 June.

“It is a great opportunity for staff and athletes to work collaboratively towards the common goal of improving distance swimming.

“We have some great coaches on board for this initiative, who will work closely with the staff and swimmers to raise the profile of distance swimming.

“We are all looking forward to a productive and informative camp.”

The Swim England team will have access to the BEST Centre’s outdoor long course facility.

The camp is in collaboration with British Swimming and the home nations, who have also selected open water athletes and staff to attend.

Three of the 10 English athletes have also been selected to compete for Great Britain at this year’s World and European Junior Championships:

  • Michaella Glenister (Leicester Sharks) – World and European Juniors
  • Fleur Lewis (Barnet Copthall) – European Juniors
  • Joel Thompson (Ellesmere Titans) – European Juniors
