Open water taster sessions will promote health benefits of swimming

The Swim England Water Wellbeing programme will this weekend be supporting a series of open water taster sessions, promoting the health benefits associated with swimming.

The sessions will seek to support people with long-term health conditions, while growing the already thriving open water community.

Research from the Sport England Active Lives survey has revealed that more than 4.1 million people swam in lakes, lochs, rivers and seas between November 2017 and November 2018.

Water Wellbeing programmes encourage more adults to get active, supporting both physical and mental health.

Elaine McNish, Swim England’s Head of Health and Wellbeing, said: “Through our research, we know that swimming has significantly reduced the symptoms of anxiety or depression for 1.4 million adults in Britain.

“Swimming, particularly outdoors, is a great way of supporting your mental health.

“We are really excited to work with these operators, who are enabling people to access a safe and supportive environment to have their first steps into open water swimming.”
