Danny Savage sets Age Group record to win 100m Fly crown

Danny Savage clocked a British Age Group record to land 100m Fly gold on day four of the British Summer Championships 2017.

The Northampton swimmer stormed to victory in a PB 54.15 to add to yesterday’s gold in the 17/18 Yrs 100m Free.

Fastest qualifier Jacob Peters – who beat Savage to the 16 Yrs title 12 months ago – pushed the 16-year old close, clocking a PB 54.34 after qualifying fastest for the final.

But Savage had enough in the tank to overturn a 0.04 deficit at the turn, coming home 0.17 seconds faster than James Guy’s old 16 Yrs age group marker from five years ago.

Although Guy lost his age group record, he did break the senior British 100m Fly record at the World Championships in Budapest, lowering it to 50.67 to qualify second fastest from the semi-finals before swimming the anchor leg for GB’s gold medal-winning 4x200m Freestyle Relay quartet.

Thompson and Mildred add to golden hauls

There were some familiar faces on top of the podium in the other age groups for the 100m Fly as Joel Thompson and Edward Mildred both won gold.

Shiverers swimmer Thompson claimed his fifth title of the meet in the 16 Yrs age group, breaking 57 seconds for the first time in the final with a PB 56.44 effort.

Meanwhile, Mildred claimed his fourth individual gold in the 13/14 Yrs age group, lowering his PB 58.94 from the heats to 57.92 in the final.

The 14-year old then added a fifth gold as part of Northampton’s 14/16 Yrs 4x200m Freestyle Relay quartet.

The team of Billy Pettit, Mildred, Jack Buswell and Archie Plowman touched just under five seconds clear of the field in 7:50.76.

Loughborough University’s Adam Barrett defended his senior 100m Fly title in 52.32 while Millfield’s Huw Williams added to his 200m Fly gold with silver in the 15 Yrs age group, the first English swimmer home in a PB 57.21.

Smart and Willis claim 200m Breaststroke crowns

The boys also battled for the 200m Breast titles on day four in Sheffield, with English champions in the top two age groups.

City of Oxford’s Callum Smart clocked 2:17.94 to narrowly beat yesterday’s 400m IM champion Jacob Greenow in the 17/18 Yrs age group.

Taunton Deane swimmer Greenow lowered his PB from this year’s European Junior Championships to follow Smart home in a PB 2:18.23.

The senior title went to one of the most experienced swimmers of the meet as Bath NC’s Andrew Willis took gold. The reigning World Short Course silver medallist clocked 2:09.25 for the victory.

Maidenhead’s Joel Lange was the top English swimmer in the 16 Yrs age group, setting a PB 2:24.06 for silver.

There were bronze medals for the best English swimmers in the youngest two age groups. Ealing’s Pietro Lombardo clocked a PB 2:27.07 for 13/14 Yrs bronze while RTW Monson’s Thomas Leman touched third in the 15 Yrs age group in a PB 2:27.65.

Sheffield complete 4x200m Free Relay double

The final event of the day saw City of Sheffield complete and men’s and women’s double in the 17/Over 4x200m Freestyle Relay.

Team Steel’s women had lowered the British club record to win the women’s title on day three at Ponds Forge.

And an all-star men’s team followed suit, as Luke Howdle, Joe Litchfield, Sam Budd and Elliot Clogg took the title in 7:25.11.
