Hynd and Hamer set world records at Summer Champs

Oliver Hynd and Tom Hamer set world records on an explosive opening day of para-swimming action at the British Summer Championships 2017.

Triple Paralympic gold medallist Hynd smashed more than two seconds off his own world record in the S8 400m Freestyle. Meanwhile, Hamer equalled the S14 200m Free world marker in the heats, then lowered it for gold in the final.

Nova Centurion’s Hynd is the dominant force in world swimming for the S8 400m Free, holding the European, World and Paralympic crowns.

And the 22-year old put paid to the world record 4:21.89 which won his Paralympic gold in Rio last year with a sublime performance in Sheffield.

With City of Derby’s S9 Paralympic bronze medallist Lewis White for company two lanes over, Hynd came home in 4:19.74 with White lowering the British record for his classification to 4:19.22.

The women’s MC title went to Corsham’s double Paralympic gold medallist Stephanie Millward, who stopped the clock on 4:51.11 to go second in this year’s S8 world rankings.

Hamer has sights set on upgrading Paralympic silver

Like Hynd, White and Millward, Hamer also won a medal at Rio 2016 with silver in the S14 200m Freestyle on his Paralympic debut.

And the 18-year old showed he has his sights firmly set on upgrading that medal to gold at Tokyo 2020.

After tying the existing world record with a 1:56.27 effort in the heats, the City of Manchester swimmer improved to 1:56.18 in the evening finals to win MC gold.

The women’s MC crown went to UEA Norwich’s Jessica-Jane Applegate, who won gold in the S14 200m Free at London 2012.

The 20-year old clocked 2:08.45 in the heats before registering a 2:07.55 time for gold in the final.
