James Wilby on song with sub minute 100m Breast

James Wilby became just the fifth English swimmer to break a minute for 100m Breaststroke in the day two heats at the Swim England National Winter Championships 2017.

The Loughborough University swimmer clocked 59.99 at Ponds Forge to lead qualifiers to tonight’s final.

His effort saw him join world record holder Adam Peaty, as well as Dan Sliwinski, James Gibson and Christopher Cook in achieving the sub-minute time.

Wilby will be desperate to repeat the feat in tonight’s final, targeting a Commonwealth consideration time of 59.98 to put himself in the frame for selection to the Gold Coast 2018.

He narrowly missed out over 200m Breaststroke on the opening night, falling just 0.09 seconds short of the selection time as he won gold.

The 100m Breast heats also saw a British age group record as 13-year old Cameron Williams (Dartmoor Darts) swam a 1:07.55 effort, beating the existing marker by 0.43 sconds.

Gold Coast in mind for 100m Back finalists

The women’s 100m Backstroke finalists will also be targeting a sub-minute times as they chase the Commonwealth consideration time of 1:01.25.

Bath’s Jessica Fullalove was the fastest English swimmer into the final, trailing Canadian pair Taylor Ruck (1:00.55) and Kayla Sanchez (1:01.14).

Sanchez also progressed to tonight’s 50m Freestyle final, second fastest behind Bath University’s Anna Hopkin.

Hopkin, who competed at the World University Games earlier this year, will look to improve on her heat swim of 25.39 as she chases a consideration time of 24.49.

In the women’s 800m Freestyle, the swimmers in tonight’s fastest heat will have 9:03.31 to beat after Barnet Copthall’s Fleur Lewis finished fastest from this morning’s slower heats.

Men set for finals over 200m Free and 400m IM

The men’s 200m Freestyle final could be one of the races of the meet.

Nick Grainger, who led out teammate Jay Lelliott in the opening 200m of last night’s 400m Free, was second fastest through on 1:50.30 while Lelliott himself progressed with a 1:50.54.

They’ll swim either side of Stockport Metro’s Kyle Chisholm, fastest qualifier on 1:50.23.

The heats of the 400m Individual Medley were also tight, with Joe Litchfield fastest on 4:25.73 but the next three qualifiers all within a second of the City of Sheffield swimmer.

Finally, the men’s 4x100m Freestyle heats saw Mount Kelly take lane four for tonight’s final, winning their heat in 3:39.27.
