Molly Renshaw strikes gold on day one in Sheffield

World champion Molly Renshaw claimed the 200m Individual Medley title on the opening night of the ASA National Winter Meet 2016.

The Loughborough Uni swimmer, who won 200m Breaststroke gold at last week’s World Short Course Championships in Canada, took the second gold for her club on day one. She lowered her 200m IM PB by just under a second to touch first in 2:08.53.

Her club mate Abbie Wood followed up for silver (2:09.47 PB) while London Aquatics Centre swimmer Aimee Willmott touched in 2:09.50 for bronze.

Renshaw said: “I am really happy with that. I only got back from Canada a couple of days ago, so to come here and do a PB, I’m really happy.”

Shuttleworth smashes PB in 400m Freestyle

Tim Shuttleworth won the Men’s 400m Freestyle A final with a new personal best time of 3:40.37.

The swimmer from Loughborough Uni had some tough competition, with Sheffield’s Nicholas Grainger challenging him for the first half of the race, and Bath Uni’s Jay Lelliott making up ground in the second half.

However, Shuttleworth maintained his pace with Lelliott finishing second in 3:40.46. Grainger took bronze with 3:44.59.

Shuttleworth said: “I feel really good about it. I’ve done some of the best training that I’ve done for a long time so it’s good to be able to translate that into the race.

“On the whole it’s been a really good year. I’ve been getting PBs throughout the year and I’m very happy with how it has gone.”

McNally continues form into 200m Back final

Craig McNally of City of Glasgow took gold in the Men’s 200m Backstroke, just missing out on a PB.

McNally shaved over two seconds from his heat swim to take the touch in 1:52.26.

Lelliot claimed his second silver of the evening in a PB 1:52.29. Conor Ferguson of Ellesmere took the final spot on the podium in 1:54.30.

Simmonds takes 100m Backstroke gold

Lizzie Simmonds swam to victory in the Women’s 100m Backstroke A final. The Bath Uni swimmer shaved almost 0.7 seconds from her time in the heats to take gold in 57.03.

Her teammate Jess Fullalove joined her on the podium, taking silver in 58.07. City of Liverpool swimmer Lauren Quigley took the bronze medal with her time of 58.14.

Simmonds commented: “It was a good strong swim from me there. The crowd were great and it was really fun to swim here today. I’m pleased with the time.”
