Morley makes it four in final session

Daniel Morley of Durham City claimed his fourth gold medal in the final session of the ASA National Summer Championships 2016.

Men’s 200m Backstroke final

In the 15yrs age group, Morley smashed his personal best time by over five seconds, touching 2:10.92. He was three seconds ahead of second place.

Jack Shillinglaw of Wirral Metro claimed his second gold medal in as many days. He had already taken the 17yrs title in the 100m Back yesterday, and swam a new personal best in the 200m to add that to his tally.

Women’s 800m Freestyle

In the 14yrs age group, Ellie Brown of Chester-le-Street left the competition in her wake, putting over two and a half seconds between her and second place. She managed to claim an early lead, and after the halfway mark, she pulled even further away. Brown touched in 9:16.75 to take the 14yrs title.

There was a standout winner in the 15yrs age group too, with Alicia Hawkins shaving seven seconds off her entry time. The Stockport Metro swimmer finally secured her first title of the competition, after winning two silver and a bronze over the course of the week. Hawkins was six seconds ahead of Doncaster Dartes swimmer, Chantelle Waugh in second place, clocking 9:16.20 for gold.

MC 100m Backstroke

Worcester’s Matthew Redfern took the gold medal in the men’s event, swimming a new PB time of 1:16.03 to claim 635 BDP. Redfern was the highest point scorer in the morning’s heats, and claimed his first title of the event ahead of James Edwards of Chippenham.

‘It was very tiring,” said Redfern. “I’ve put a lot of effort into it so I’m happy with the result [gold medal]. I only missed out on a personal best by seven hundredths this morning, so to smash it by a further eight tenths I does feel very good.”

Adele Maguire of Warrington Warriors took the gold in the women’s event. It was a close competition, with just 13 BDP between first and second place. S8 swimmer, Maguire, touched in 1:30.36 for a new personal best and the 100m Backstroke title.

Men’s 50m Butterfly final

In the men’s 16yrs age group, Benjamin Martin of Pioneer 79 dominated the race to finish half a second ahead of the rest of the field. He knocked three tenths of a second from his previous PB to claim his first medal of the competition.

In the 18yrs event, there was almost nothing to separate the entire field. Plymouth Leander’s Robert Fannon was the first to the touch, claiming the gold medal with 24.77 to set a new personal best for the second time that day.

Women’s 50m Butterfly final

In the 14yrs event, it would have been impossible to judge the winner without electronic timing. Lucy Hardey of Liverpool and Duru Tanir were less than a tenth of a second apart. Hardey clinched the gold medal with 29.65, while Tanir was awarded silver for 29.66.

In the 17yrs+ age group it was Amrita Robertson who clocked the fastest time. Last year’s 200m Freestyle champion in the 17yrs age group touched 28.52 to claim gold for the Borough of Waltham Forest

Women’s 200m Backstroke final

Jessica Teale of Leeds was in front from the start of the race, maintaining her lead at every turn. She had some pressure from Olivia Butler of Severnside, who looked determined to claim her second gold. Teale did not slack off the pace though, and did a six second personal best time to take the 12/13yrs title.

In the 15yrs event, Robyn Moon of Thanet Swim swam almost five seconds under her qualifying time in the heats. She added the 200m Backstroke title to her 50m Back on day three.

“I feel really happy to have got gold,” said Moon. “I’ve been training on my backstroke so it’s good to see it pay off. I shaved some time off my personal best, but it was a really hard race.”
