Edward Mildred sets new British junior record at National Winter Championships

Fifteen-year-old Edward Mildred set a new British junior record during the day two heats at the Swim England National Winter Championships.

The Northampton swimmer clocked 1:57.52 in the 200m Butterfly to shatter his own previous British best of 1:58.78 that he set at Harvey Hadden last month by 1.26 seconds.

He was the fourth quickest qualifier for the A Final finishing behind Plymouth Leander’s Thomas Beeley (1:55.01), Bath University’s James Guy (1:56.81) and High Performance Centre Ontario’s Mack Darragh (1:57.06).

Warrington’s Matthew Domville was fifth in 1:57.58 followed by Dearne Valley’s Joe Litchfield (1:58.38).

Also in the A Final are Plymouth Leander’s Freddy Clampett (1:58.99), Hatfield’s James Woodward (1:59.12), Loughborough University’s Kevin Wallbank (1:59.53) and City of Manchester Aquatics’ Thomas Paine (1:59.94).

Seven have sights set on Butterfly gold

Seven swimmers will go into the Women’s 100m Butterfly final believing they can grab gold.

They all finished within 1.12 seconds of each other in a fast qualifier at Ponds Forge.

Loughborough University’s Marie Wattel was the quickest qualifier in 58.56 but Plymouth Leander’s Laura Stephens was only 0.04 seconds adrift in 58.60, while Newcastle’s Emily Large third fastest in 58.81.

Ealing’s Anna Hopkin, who earlier had set a personal best in qualifying for the 50m Freestyle A Final, was fourth in 59.35, with Loughborough University’s Emily Crane (59.64) and Megan Morrison (59.66) in front of City of Sheffield’s Amy Bell (59.68).

Also reaching the final were City of Sheffield’s Isobel Grant (1:00.01), Stockport Metro’s Isobel Spinley (1:00.10) and Stockport Metro’s Ciara Standing (1:00.21).

Clark eyes Breaststroke double

Imogen Clark has her sights set on a National Winter Championships breaststroke double after cruising through her 50m heat.

The 19-year-old, who won the 100m Breaststroke title on day one at Sheffield, was the fastest qualifier in the event after recording a time of 29.80.

She was the only woman to clock a time under 30 seconds and was 0.80 ahead of her Loughborough University team-mate Sarah Vasey, who finished in 30.60.

Stockport Metro’s Katie Matts was third fastest in 31.14 followed by High Performance Centre Ontario’s Kayla Sanchez (31.17) and Worcester’s Tabitha Monkhouse (31.18).

Also qualifying were Loughborough University’s Carmella Kitching (31.25), Mount Kelly’s Niamh Robinson (31.68), Bournemouth’s Kayla Van Der Merwe (31.70), RTW Monson’s Anna Leman (31.71) and Newcastle’s Rachel Taylor.

New personal best for Howdle

Thomas Howdle set a new personal best as he qualified fastest for the Men’s 50m Backstroke A Final.

The Stockport Metro 21-year-old knocked 0.80 seconds from his previous best time of 24.48, set at the Manchester International Swim Meet in October, as he finished in 23.68.

He was the only man under 24 seconds, with Newcastle’s Nicholas Pyle second in 24.29, while Loughborough University’s Luke Greenbank was third in a time of 24.37.

City of Sheffield’s Elliot Clogg (24.43) and Loughborough University’s Brian O’Sullivan (24.99) were the only others to break the 25-second barrier.

Millfield’s Brodie Williams (25.08), Pioneer 79’s Thomas Gilroy (25.24), Loughborough University’s James Oxborrow (25.30), Mount Kelly’s Alex Mason (25.43) and Windsor’s Moritz Hoogers (25.45) also qualified for the A Final.
