Water Wellbeing project shortlisted for prestigious health and wellbeing award

Swim England’s Water Wellbeing project has been shortlisted for an award at the Royal Society for Public Health’s prestigious Health & Wellbeing Awards 2021.

It was one of only three projects to be shortlisted in the Community Health Development category, alongside Redthread Youth and the University of Plymouth and Nudge Community Builders.

Water Wellbeing was developed in 2018 with an aim to transform existing community swimming pool assets into places for health, wellbeing and rehabilitation.

This model can be implemented by any public pool in England and will help to improve outcomes for people with long-term health conditions.

The Water Wellbeing project was also highly commended in the Healthy Communities Award category at the recent ukactive awards.

On being shortlisted for the award, Swim England chief executive Jane Nickerson said: “We are delighted to be considered for the Community Health Development award.

Healthier and happier lives

“The Water Wellbeing project has helped a wide range of people up and down the country who can’t exercise on dry land due to their conditions.

“Our aim is to encourage and provide opportunities for everyone to take part in aquatics in the way that suits them and help people lead healthier, happier lives.”

Swim England’s water wellbeing specialist, Andrew Power, added: “Swimming and other forms of water-based exercise offer numerous advantages compared to land-based exercise.

“The unique properties of water make swimming perfect for people of all ages to exercise, those with injuries, impairments and long-term health conditions.

“We are pleased to see our work with Water Wellbeing being recognised and would like to thank all of our strategic and delivery partners who are also involved in this important project.”

All award winners will be announced at the RSPH Health & Wellbeing Awards 2021 gala event which is set to be held on Thursday 21 October.
