The European Solo Free prelims kicked off the LEN European Aquatics Championships 2016, with some exceptional performances at the London Aquatics Centre yesterday.

European Solo Free prelims

London 2012 Olympian, Olivia Federici, showed that she was back on form after her spell in retirement, putting on a fantastic show in front of a home crowd on the opening day.

Although her routine was not as difficult as some of the other competitors, her execution and artistic impression secured her a 9th place finish and a spot in the finals tonight.

GB Technical Team final

GB also showed some promise in the Team Technical final, the first final of the competition. They are a young team with a huge amount of potential, and they drew plenty of cheers from the home crowd with their fast paced routine.

The girls swam their best performance of the season, and although they looked a little shaky at the start, they soon came into their own. The rapid violin music of Paganini made for an explosive routine and the girls finished with 76.9850 for eighth place.

“We’ve got a great group of girls here in London and we really enjoyed that performance,” said British swimmer Hannah Randall.

Randall’s teammate Katie Clark added: “It’s really great to be part of the European Champs. I just love this pool and it has such a great vibe about it.

“Being in front of a home crowd makes it even more special and amazing and it’s only going to get better as they week goes on.”

Russia won the gold medal with a mesmerising Safri Duo routine with a score of 94.0994, Ukraine claimed silver with 92.0844 and Italy followed up for bronze with 88.9053.
