June Cooper, from Cottingham, was in Belfast this weekend for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards after being named BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero for East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
The 79-year-old has taught swimming classes for more than 30 years and was given the award for her dedications and commitment to the Hull-based Exercise and Swim 4 Health Group, who were given a grant from Comic Relief earlier this year following the work they have been doing in the community.
The classes, which are run from Frederick Holmes School in Inglemire Lane, North Hull, are aimed at helping elderly people get active. The group also helps young people with learning disabilities and June said that his was more rewarding that any award she could be given.
“We have this one boy who comes every week” said June. “He doesn’t do anything else all week and you can just see the great, big smile on his face every time he gets in the pool.
“It’s just such a joy to see and it really fills me up with delight. That to me is worth much more than any award.”
