In British Swimming you will find information about the world of high performance sport, including the disciplines of Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Para-Swimming.

The ASA is the governing body for the sport in England. In this section you will find all you need to know about joining a club or competing in England and becoming a swimming teacher or coach.

The IoS delivers the ASA’s courses and is a member organisation. Whether you are a teacher, coach, employer or club you will find everything you need to know about qualifications or educating your workforce.

Insurance Cover

ASA affiliated clubs and club members receive insurance cover which includes Civil Liability Cover, Employer’s Liability, Personal Accident Insurance (under 75 yrs and limited insurance for 70 – 80 yrs) and Legal Expenses Insurance.

For Civil Liability the indemnity is set at £20,000,000 per any one occurrence; Employer’s Liability - £10,000,000 any one occurrence but limited to £5,000,000 in respect of Terrorism; Legal Expenses - £50,000 per claim. There is no policy excess.

Cover is provided for all Club members, including volunteers/casual helpers*. Indemnity extends to:

  • club activities, including training for and competitive swimming, as well as social, fund rising and administrative activities. For ASA insured and excluded activities CLICK HERE
  • a club member who causes injury, damage or financial loss to a fellow member
  • a club which borrows, rents or leases a premises for sporting or social purposes and is held liable for damage to the facility.

*The ASA/IoS encourages all clubs and swim schools to have appropriately qualified teachers and coaches covering all sessions but also recognises that from time to time both clubs and swim schools may have difficulty in finding volunteers with the appropriate qualifications (especially in the smaller disciplines) and therefore providing the sessions are operated within the standard safety framework and in line with the procedures laid down by the Pool Operator the insurance policy is valid.
