Greta Hampson stars to win Tech Solo gold
April 21, 2018Greta Hampson kicked off the 2018 Swim England Synchronised Swimming National Championships with a bang, starring to win gold in the Technical Solo competition.
The City of Bristol teenager was the only swimmer to break 70 points on the day, as she won the senior national title at her first attempt.
Hampson came into the competition with a burgeoning reputation, having won the 15-18 Years National Age Group crown in November last year.
And she cemented her status as one of the country’s rising stars in Nottingham, scoring an impressive 72.9328 to lift the Colin Lushington Memorial Trophy.
While triple Olympian Olivia Federici scored 76.0683 to win the title in 2016, Hampson’s score was the highest on the national stage since Commonwealth medallist Lauren Smith in 2010.
Brandimarte and Costello complete podium
Team Bath’s Ilaria Brandimarte won her third Solo Tech medal in four years as she took silver behind Hampson.
The Italian-born swimmer beat her score to win gold in 2015 and bronze last year as she finished with 65.9388.
City of Leeds’ Millicent Costello – fifth behind Hampson in the Solo competition at last year’s National Age Groups – stepped up to take the third spot on the podium.
Costello, who won Free Duet silver with Rebecca Richardson 12 months ago, scored 64.9551.
