Kate Shortman takes 13/14 Yrs Solo gold

Kate Shortman stole the show in the opening competitive event of the ASA National Age Group Synchronised Swimming Championships, taking gold in the 13/14 years solo.

Shortman performed a dramatic routine to the music from Carmen, showing poise and control in spin-downs and maintaining strong artistic impression throughout.

The Bristol Synchro swimmer made good use of the pool, travelling at speed between figures and gaining good height out of the water for an overall score of 139.3889.

Close rival, teammate and duet partner, Izzy Thorpe – who won gold in the 12 and under event last year – swam to an emotive Christina Aguilera piece, finishing just two points off the leader with 137.3889.

Great to back up Figures in the Solo

Commenting on her performance, Shortman said: “I’m really pleased with my swim today. I was really happy with the figures results this morning and to back it up in the solo is great.

“Having Izzy at the same club is great as it keeps us on the ball and we really know what we’re up against.

“It’s never the same between us when we compete; some days it’ll be me, some days it’ll be her but I’m glad to come away with the win.”

City of Salford swimmer Greta Hampson took bronze with a score of 128.6593.
