Terrific Tomblin takes World Cup gold in Canada
May 6, 2025Ranjuo Tomblin added two more solo medals to his belt, including a Male Solo Technical gold at the third leg of the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup.
The European champion also took bronze in the Free event as well as just missing out on the medals in the Mixed Duet Free with Holly Hughes.
The result continued the teenagers impressive start to the season and his best World Cup campaign to date after medalling in both previous legs in France and Egypt.
Performing to ‘The 5th’ by David Garrett, Tomblin showed great musicality on his way to an impressive total of 218.667.
He scored 89.0000 for artistic impression and 129.1667 for elements to edge out Mexico’s Diego Villalobos (214.8667) and Colombia’s Gustavo Sanchez (210.6292) who won silver and bronze respectively.
It added to his gold at the opening leg in Paris, as well as his silver in Somabay, and the 19-year-old told World Aquatics that this season is the best he’s had so far.
He said: “I would say this season is going better than any season I’ve had.
“I maybe feel like in previous seasons I could have pushed more, and I feel this year is my year and I keep getting the rewards.
“We had another set of rule changes (for the 2025 season) and I think it’s really playing to our strengths and it’s really nice to be able to mix more of the artistic impression into the hybrids.”
The technical gold in Paris marked the nation’s first World Cup medal and now just two months later he has five to his name.
That was after a bronze in the Free Solo – the event where he is the reigning European champion.
He returned with a medal thanks to a score of 187.5338 as he took his new free routine to an international stage for the first time.
That was narrowly behind Villalobos and China’s rising star Guo Maye – who took gold with 192.7988.
The performances will have given him plenty of confidence heading into the upcoming European Championships and he hopes that his performances are inspiring the next generation of male athletes in the sport.
He added: “It’s my first time competing this routine, this year, and it’s important with the Free to gain the confidence for future events.
“There are a few males in Great Britain doing artistic swimming, but they’re quite young, so I’m looking to inspire as many boys as I can when I do this.”
New routines and strong displays
Tomblin’s work in Markham wasn’t quite done yet as he narrowly missed out on a medal alongside Holly Hughes in the Mixed Free Duet competition.
The duo, who took technical gold in the opening leg in Paris, finished around 20 points off the podium with another brand-new routine for the British team.
Their new snake inspired displayed showed off their creativity and earnt them a solid total of 244.5915 which they’ll take with them as they prepare for their future events.
Eve Young and Robyn Swatman also put in some strong displays to secure two top ten finishes in the women’s duet events.
They recorded a clean swim in the technical event, where they increased their difficulty since the opening leg in Paris back in March.
That saw them increase their score from Paris by almost 25 points, recording a score of 252.1342 for ninth place.
The pair finished one place higher in the free competition with a score of 176.8713.
Debuting their new ‘she wolves’ routine Swatman and Young recorded a total of 104.2000 for artistic impression and 72.6713 for elements.
